Translucent guitar finish kit for a deep transparent black guitar finish with striking grain definition. This black grain filler guitar kit pairs water-based products into one consistent, repeatable workflow, dispatched from our UK warehouse.
What It Does
This translucent guitar finish kit is built for luthiers in the UK who want a transparent guitar finish with real visual depth. The system combines water-based black grain filler, water-based clear sealer, a metal complex dye powder kit, and water-based clear lacquer gloss to deliver a glossy, see-through black finish that lets the grain pop.
Key Features
- Water-based Black Grain Filler – fills pores and highlights the grain in black (great for ceruse / limed effects)
- Water-based Clear Sealer – stabilises the surface and improves colour control
- Metal Complex Dye Powder Kit – mix with ethanol to create transparent guitar stain colours
- Water-based Clear Lacquer Gloss – final clear coat gloss topcoat for protection and shine
Compatibility
Every product in this kit is designed to work together as a single workflow: grain fill → seal → dye → clear coat. The dye concentrates are mixed with ethanol (denatured alcohol) to create transparent colour whilst preserving the grain. Application
- Grain fill (black): apply across the surface, work it into the pores, then remove excess from the surface. Let dry and sand back until clean.
- Seal: apply thin coats of clear sealer to lock the surface and even out absorption. Lightly sand if needed.
- Dye (ethanol-based): mix your metal complex dye powder with ethanol using your chosen recipe. Test on scrap wood or in a cavity first, then apply evenly.
- Clear coat gloss: apply multiple thin coats of water-based clear lacquer gloss. Allow proper drying between coats and sand lightly between coats if required.
Notes
Tip: Always test your colour on the same wood species and sanding level. Wood, lighting, and screen images can shift colour perception—testing keeps results predictable and repeatable.
