What’s Included
-
Metal Complex Dye Kit (powders) – Yellow / Red / Blue / Black to mix any guitar stain colour (to dissolve in ethanol).
-
Water-Based Dark Grain Filler – fills pores and highlights the grain in black for maximum contrast.
-
Water-Based Clear Sealer – stabilises the surface, improves control, and helps the topcoat lay flatter.
-
Water-Based Clear Lacquer Matt – protective matte top coat for a low-sheen, natural-looking finish.
Why Dark Grain Filler
-
Grain contrast: black pores make the figure and grain lines stand out.
-
Depth under clear coat: contrast appears deeper once sealed and top-coated.
-
Works with colour: apply translucent dye over and around the grain for dramatic modern finishes.
Why a Matte Clear Coat
A clear matte lacquer protects the wood without a high-gloss look—ideal for modern builds and a natural-feel matte finish on guitar bodies and necks.
Coverage
Includes enough product to finish at least 2 guitars in typical translucent workflows (actual use varies by wood porosity, application method, and coat count).
Recommended Workflow
-
Grain fill (black): push the dark grain filler into the pores, remove excess, let dry, then sand back until the surface is clean and smooth.
-
Seal: apply thin coats of clear sealer to stabilise the surface; lightly sand if needed for a flat base.
-
Dye (ethanol-based): mix metal complex dyes with ethanol to create your colour; test on scrap or a hidden area before full application.
-
Clear coat (matte): apply multiple thin coats of water-based clear lacquer matt for protection and an even, low sheen.
