Why adjust nut slots?
String action—the height between the fret and the string—affects playability. Lower action can make chord changes easier but may increase the risk of fret buzz. Nut slotting with the right guitar nut files lets you set the action for each string precisely at the first fret.
Basic setup levers
- Truss rod adjustment to control neck relief.
- Bridge height to set overall string height (and, on some bridges, per-string height).
- Fret work to address uneven frets and potential buzz—see our guitar fret tools.
- Nut slotting to dial in first-fret action for each string using the appropriate nut slot file size.
