CREATE ANY COLOUR YOU WANT AND REVEAL THE WOOD GRAIN WITH OUR CUSTOM FINISH KIT (DYE + CLEAR COAT + OPTIONS).
This bundle lets you build a complete guitar finishing system for translucent / transparent finishes—from natural looks to bold custom colours. Choose your metal-complex dye (powder to mix with ethanol), select a water-based clear lacquer (gloss or matt), add an optional clear sealer for extra control, and pick the grain filler that matches your wood and the effect you want (mahogany / natural / black / or none). Optional prep materials and polishing upgrades help you achieve a cleaner, smoother, more consistent result.
Designed for at least 2 guitars (body + neck) in most projects (depending on guitar size and application method), this bundle is ideal for multiple colours, test batches, bursts/fades, and custom mixes.
Some items are optional and depend on your workflow. Use the options below to build the exact setup you need (wood type, grain effect, gloss level, and tools you already own).

HOW TO PAINT YOUR GUITAR — PROCESS OVERVIEW
1. Prep & sanding: Sand the corps/manche progressively to a fine grit for a clean, even base (optional sanding set).
2. Masking & protection: Protect cavities and edges for crisp lines (optional masking tape).
3. Grain filler (optional): Choose mahogany / natural / black / none depending on your wood and the grain effect you want (grain filling + smoother base).
4. Dye (required): Mix the metal-complex dye powder with ethanol to create stock solutions, then apply your custom colour(s).
5. Sealer (optional): Lock in colour and improve levelling/consistency (especially helpful for spraying).
6. Clear coat (required): Choose water-based clear lacquer gloss or matt to protect the finish and reveal the grain.
7. Polishing (optional): Recommended for maximum depth on gloss finishes and a more “factory” final feel.
BUILD YOUR OWN GUITAR FINISH KIT (WHAT TO SELECT)
This is a true custom guitar finish bundle: instead of a one-size box, you choose each component to suit your wood, your colour and your method. Whether you're new to finishing or refining your technique, it's an ideal way to learn how to paint your guitar properly here in the UK. If you'd rather start from a ready-made set, browse our full guitar finishing kit range first.
1) Materials for finishing (optional)
Select these if you don’t already have them:
- Sanding paper set: essential for prep and for levelling between coats.
- Masking tape: clean edges, protected cavities, simpler workflow.
- Copper tape: shielding to reduce electromagnetic interference (control cavity).
(Other accessories may be offered as optional upgrades depending on your setup.)
2) Grain filler (choose one or none)
Pick the grain filler that matches your wood and your target look:
- Natural: a neutral base, excellent for ash and for ceruse / tinted-grain effects (can be tinted with dye).
- Mahogany: warmer base for mahogany-style woods and classic/vintage translucent finishes.
- Black: high-contrast “grain pop” for dramatic translucent results (great on open-pore woods like ash).
- None: best for closed-pore woods or if you don’t want to accentuate grain.
3) Sealer (YES / NO)
A sealer helps control absorption and can improve consistency—especially if you plan to spray or want extra control over colour depth.
If you apply clear coats by brush and your surface is already smooth, you can often skip the sealer and build smoothness with extra clear coats instead.
4) Dye selection (required)
This is the heart of any custom guitar finish: choose your dye(s) and create virtually any transparent colour by mixing ethanol-based stock solutions—effectively a colour matching kit guitar finish approach.
Ideal for translucent finishes on veneers, figured tops (flame/quilt), and grain-forward bodies.
You can also combine colours for bursts, fades, shaded edges, and custom recipes.
5) Clear coat selection (required)
Choose your final topcoat:
- Gloss: maximum depth and clarity; can be polished for a mirror shine.
- Matt: a modern or vintage “soft sheen” look with controlled reflections.
6) Polishing option (optional)
Recommended if you want the deepest gloss and more professional reflections.
Polishing also refines the feel of the finish once fully cured.
COVERAGE & RESULTS
This bundle is sized to cover at least 2 guitars (corps + manche) for most builds, depending on guitar size and application method.
It’s ideal for translucent finishes, natural finishes, veneers / figured tops, and multi-colour projects (bursts, fades, tinted grain, ceruse effects).
NOTES
Detailed usage instructions, mixing recipes, and colour-adjustment rules are available in our user guide.
For best accuracy, always test your colour on scrap wood or inside cavities before committing to the full corps.
