Usage
Apply the Walnut dye after grain filler (if used). It can go on before or after the sealer coat. You can mix the dye with grain filler, though applying dye after grain filler gives better control of the walnut stain intensity. Staining before the sealer is preferred.
Build several thin layers to control the tint of the grain. Do not use this dye with non‑transparent finishes such as solid colour lacquer or white primer.
Compatibility
Compatible with nitrocellulose, polyurethane and waterbased finishing solutions, as well as grain filler. Use only with transparent finishing: natural grain filler, clear sealer, transparent colour lacquer and clear varnish.
Preparation and Application
- Base: solvent based walnut dye; dilute in a solvent such as water or white spirit for direct application to wood.
- Dilution guideline: approximately 3% to 10% with water, depending on application.
- Application method: a tack cloth is an easy method for even coverage.
- Veneer caution: on veneered bodies, apply light coats and allow to dry between coats to avoid lifting the veneer.
Grain Highlighting Technique
Apply a black dye base and sand back, then stain with Walnut to accentuate figure (quilted, flamed, spalted, ash burl). Alternatively, black dye can be used before or mixed with clear sealer, followed by transparent colour lacquer.
