Red wine wood dye for guitar finishing — a deep, transparent wine red dye that highlights figure and grain. This Dartfords wood dye delivers a rich guitar wine red tone across maple, ash and other tonewoods, and is in stock in the UK.

Usage

Apply after grain filler (if used). It can be applied before or after the sealer; The Guitar Kit Fabrik prefers staining before sealer. Apply several thin layers to control the intensity of the wine red dye. Do not use with non-transparent finishes such as solid colour lacquer or white primer.

Compatibility

Compatible with nitrocellulose, polyurethane, waterbased solutions, and grain filler. Use only with transparent finishing systems: natural grain filler, clear sealer, transparent colour lacquer, and clear varnish. Browse the full range of guitar wood dye to match your build.

Preparation & Application

This red wine dye is dye concentrate; dilute in a solvent such as water or white spirit for direct wood application. If used alongside waterbased products, use white spirit for better mixing. Recommended dilution: approximately 3%–10% with water depending on application. Apply with a tack cloth. For veneered bodies, apply light coats and allow drying between coats to avoid lifting the veneer.

Grain Enhancement Tip

To accentuate figure (quilted, flame, spalted, ash burl), apply a black dye base, sand back, then stain with the chosen colour. Black remains in pronounced grain whilst the top coat carries the selected colour. You may also combine dyes with clear sealer or use dyes before a transparent colour lacquer to enhance grain. See our complete guitar finishing range for sealers and lacquers, dispatched from our UK warehouse.

Getting a 3D Figured-Top Effect with Red Wine Dye

This wine dye is well-suited to reveal and highlight wood grain on quilted, flamed, or spalted veneers, producing a 3D effect, especially on maple or wood with pronounced streaks. It's a popular choice amongst luthiers in the UK.

Example workflow: mix or apply black dye as a base to settle into the deepest figure, sand back, then apply your red wine dye over the top. Follow with clear sealer and a transparent colour lacquer if desired to showcase the enhanced veneer.
