Usage

Apply after grain filler (if used). This orange wood dye can be used before or after the sealer; staining between grain filler and sealer is preferred, with thin layers to control intensity. Do not combine with non-transparent products such as solid colour lacquer or white primer.

Compatibility

Compatible with nitrocellulose, polyurethane, water-based solutions, and natural grain filler. Use only with transparent finishing systems: natural grain filler, clear sealer, transparent colour lacquer, and clear varnish.

Preparation & Application

Dilute in a solvent such as water or white spirit for direct application to wood. If used alongside water-based products, prefer white spirit for better mixing. Recommended dilution is approximately 3% to 10% with water, depending on application. Apply with a tack cloth. For veneer tops, apply light coats and allow drying between coats to avoid lifting the veneer.

Grain-Highlighting Technique

For a pronounced 3D effect on quilted, flamed, spalted, or ash burl tops, apply a black dye base and sand back, then stain with the dark orange dye. Black remains in the deepest grain, enhancing contrast. You can also combine orange dyes with clear sealer or apply dye before sealer, then finish with a transparent colour lacquer.

Tips for revealing figured tops with dark orange dye

Orange dyes can dramatically highlight quilted, flame, spalted, or ash burl veneers to create a 3D effect. A common approach amongst luthiers in the UK is to lay down a black dye first, sand back to leave colour in the deepest grain, then apply your dark orange wood dye for enhanced contrast and depth.

For colour-tinted transparent finishes, you can stain the corps, seal it, and then apply a transparent colour lacquer to achieve vivid results whilst showcasing the wood figure.
