Alcohol-based cobalt blue wood stain for finishing electric guitar builds, in stock in the UK. This concentrated cobalt blue dye delivers a deep, saturated tone—ideal for a striking cobalt blue Stratocaster or any custom dyeing blue project on figured tonewoods.
Usage
Apply this cobalt dye after any grain filler application and either before or after the sealer coat. It can be mixed with grain filler, though applying the dye after grain filling gives better control of stain intensity. Preferred approach: stain between grain filler and sealer coats, with several thin layers, and optionally do a final adjustment after sealer. Do not use dye with non-transparent products such as solid colour lacquer or white primer. Browse the full range of guitar wood dye to build a custom palette.
Compatibility
Compatible with The Guitar Kit Fabrik finishing solutions: nitrocellulose, polyurethane, waterbased products, and grain filler. Dyes allow the use of waterbased solutions; they are recommended with ecological, non-toxic waterbased lacquers. Use only with transparent finishes: natural grain filler, clear sealer, transparent colour lacquer, and clear varnish. See our complete guitar finishing supplies for matching products.
Preparation & Application
Alcohol-based cobalt blue dye; dilute in a solvent such as water or white spirit for direct application on wood. If used with waterbased products, use white spirit for better mixing. Typical dilution: 3%–10% with water depending on application. Apply with a tack cloth. For veneered bodies, apply thin coats and allow drying between coats to avoid lifting the veneer.
Grain Highlighting Tip
Apply a black dye base, sand back, then apply the cobalt blue. The black remains in pronounced grain, increasing contrast and 3D effect—especially effective on quilted, flame, spalted, or ash burl veneers. You can also combine dyes with transparent colour lacquer to enhance figured tops on a cobalt blue guitar.
