Alcohol-based black wood dye for guitar finishing — a deep, transparent black guitar stain for highlighting grain and building a black stained guitar look. In stock in the UK with fast UK delivery.

Usage

Apply after grain filler (if used). It can be used before or after the sealer; the preferred sequence is to stain between grain filler and sealer, with several thin layers to control intensity. Do not combine with non-transparent products such as solid colour lacquer or white primer.

Compatibility

Compatible with nitrocellulose, polyurethane, waterbased solutions, and grain filler. As an alcohol based dye for shellac and other transparent finishes, use only with natural grain filler, clear sealer, transparent colour lacquer, and clear varnish. Preparation & Application

  • Base: alcohol.
  • Dilution solvent: water or white spirit. If used with waterbased products, use white spirit for better mixing.
  • Recommended dilution: 3%–10% with water depending on application.
  • Application method: tack cloth is recommended.
  • Veneer caution: on veneered bodies, apply light coats and allow to dry between coats to avoid lifting the veneer.

Grain Enhancement Tip

Apply a black dye for wood base, sand back, then apply the colour of your choice. The black remains in pronounced streaks, increasing contrast on quilted, flamed, spalted, or ash burl veneers. You may also mix this black wood stain guitar finish with clear sealer (or apply the black dye before sealer), then finish with a transparent colour lacquer. Getting a 3D figured-top look with black dye

A black wood dye is one of the most effective ways to reveal and highlight grain, especially on quilted, flame, or spalted veneers. For a pronounced 3D effect on figured maple, start with a black base coat, sand back to leave colour in the deepest grain, then apply your chosen transparent colour for a striking black stained guitar contrast.
