GUITAR PAINT SET
FINISHING PAINT KIT FOR GUITAR BUILD
If you've purchased a kit guitar or just the body and neck, and now you're considering what finish to apply, you might find yourself overwhelmed by the available options. The Guitar Fabric offers finishing kits for guitars to ensure you purchase only what you need for your desired finish, saving money with our discounts. From our guitar painting set, you can choose the type of paint and application method that best suits your preferences.
First, you should decide on the painting method from our paint guitar set categories:
- Sunburst Guitar Finish: Allows you to select any color to create your own sunburst custom finish, including the well-known tobacco sunburst.
- Translucent Finishing: Reveals the natural beauty of the wood grain, with techniques like ceruse to create an awesome guitar finish.
- Natural Finish: Provides a very natural look using only transparent wood dye or varnish with grain filler.
- Veneer Paint Set: Highlights the veneer, especially useful if you've chosen a body with a veneer maple top from our guitar kit.
- Opaque Finishing: Contains products for a solid opaque finish similar to what you'd find in a typical music shop.
Once you've chosen the painting method for your guitar body and neck, you can then select the type of finishing you want to use. We offer a wide selection: Nitrocellulose spray, dye, water-based, polyurethane, or tru oil. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks as explained below. Note that each guitar paint kit is rated in terms of difficulty. Guitar finishing kits typically contain wood filler, primer, one or two colors, varnish, and polish. Each featured kit provides more information on how to use it, which products to select, and offers a link to our blog for finishing examples for inspiration.
*SELECTING VARNISH BETWEEN POLYURETHANE, WATERBASE & NITROCELLULOSE FOR YOUR TOP COAT
Each type of varnish we offer has its advantages and disadvantages:
- Water-based Finish: Environmentally friendly and non-toxic, allowing you to paint in confined spaces without protection. Water-based varnish ages well without changing color, but slightly flattens the grain, offering less relief than nitrocellulose or polyurethane. Recommended for beginners and those on a low budget, as it's easy to apply without the need for protective materials or designated painting space.
- Nitrocellulose Finish: Very toxic, requiring protective gear and proper ventilation. Offers a vintage look over time with yellowing or cracking, providing a more intense shine than polyurethane. Recommended for intermediate to expert painters, or beginners using spray cans, seeking a different finish than commercially available options but aware of its fragility and susceptibility to scratching.
- Polyurethane Finish: Also toxic, requiring protective gear like nitrocellulose. Very durable, not aging or cracking, and drying quickly. Some believe it affects the guitar's sound or breathability compared to nitrocellulose. Recommended for intermediate to expert painters wanting a modern finish similar to today's music shop guitars.
- Tru-Oil Finish: Non-toxic oil finish offering a nice, often-used natural or transparent finish. Develops an amber tone with additional coats for a vintage look. Applied easily with a cloth, but may require many coats for adequate protection. Ensure a smooth surface before application to reduce the number of coats needed.
